Health Resources for Dads

May 18, 2008 by Dad · Leave a Comment

Yesterday, May17th - my birthday, I discovered a lump on my back just below my shoulder blade. It is almost as if a small breast implant was placed inside my skin. Soft, flexible, round, and not painful. It’s about 3 inches around and about 1/2 and inch thick in the center, tapering down to the edges.

As most of us would do I went online to try and find some answers so I thought it would make sense to share my favorite resources with you.

My hunt for answers started with a trip to WebMD. They have a great symptom checker that helps narrow down the possibilities with most symptoms you or your family members might have. Unfortunately, I didn’t come up with anything that matched my lump on WebMD.

My second stop was found by doing a search on Google for “back lump”. I spotted a site named ‘Doctors Lounge‘ and a page where someone else had asked about a smaller growth on their back and they received a quality response from an actual Doctor! Pretty nice service considering it’s free. Doctors really do want to save lives!

This doctor, Dr. Anthony Solomon thought it was either a cyst or a Lipoma. The Lipoma possibility is the one I tracked down by performing another search for Lipoma. By the end of the day I pinned my hopes on the lump being a non-malignant fatty Lipoma.

If it doesn’t go away on it’s own or if there is any pain or other symptoms that cause concern I’ll visit the doctor’s office and report back on what this growth is.

Other health resources you should bookmark include:

Mayo Clinic’s Mens Health - Unmatched expertise and a wealth of useful information.

Mayo Clinic

Kids Health - The most visited Website for children’s health issues.

Kids Health

CureZone - I discovered this site a couple of years ago and strongly recommend it as a place to learn from the experiences of others who are dealing with the same heath issues or having the same symptoms. It’s primarily an alternative health crowd giving you a nice balance to the traditional medical professional’s solutions. Many of the posters are converts so it makes for some passionate exchanges. While you’re there be sure to learn about liver flushes and other flushes that will help cleanse your body so it can return to health or remain healthy.

Good health to you!

Burger King takes it on the chin

March 16, 2008 by Dad · Leave a Comment

That dorky King you see running around in those lame Burger King commercials really takes one on the chin from Joe Prah over at JoePrah.com.

His post really blasts Burger King and he backs it up with some interesting info. I found it to be very timely as I had a double whopper about a week and a half ago, which is very rare for me as I have high cholesterol and I know better. What happened after that fat filled feast is worth mentioning as it may save someone else from going through the same multi-day digestive process.

A couple of days after shoving that double whopper down I became… er… well constipated. At about the same time I began having cramp like pains to the left of my heart. Actually felt like I was pregnant with a lil’ kicker in there periodically letting me have a good kick in the ribs. This went on for several days and frankly I was concerned because heart trouble runs in my family on my dad’s side.

After 4 days of this kicking sensation and feeling bloated I broke down and decided to see a doctor. So the next day I went in to try and figure out what the heck the problem was.

As we ruled out heart trouble we began focusing on my diet and we quickly narrowed it down to eating that double whopper, as well as, hundreds upon hundreds of shelled peanuts courtesy of Costco and years of being told they were healthy. It’s worth mentioning that I was not drinking enough water either. Maybe 2 cups out of the recommended 8 per day.

So at least the ordeal ended without a stint, pacemaker, or worse. Needless to say I’m off of fat filled feasts and peanuts and feeling better now.

Check out the post over at JoePrah.com and think twice before you take your kids or yourself to Burger King in the future.

To your health!

Music that heals

November 21, 2007 by Dad · Leave a Comment

Yesterday I received a Dads Directory submission for a musician whose music purportedly helps to heal people. Of course I had to check this out firsthand….

On the violinist’s website, Daniel Kobialka, I found a wealth of information about his music plus testimonials from people who have experienced some fascinating results from simply listening to his classic/New Age style. Even the letter from a caregiver describing the experience she and a dying woman had listening to the music together was encouraging. What better way to spend your last moments then listening to a world class violinist?

The only thing I had a hard time finding on the site were links to samples of Kobialka’s music. So to save you the trouble I’ve added links to some samples of his music below. Enjoy!

Just click on PLAY…

Relaxing music isn’t it?
